To plan, or not to plan...that is the question?

A lot of any relax time at home that I get during the winter is spent planning (sometimes only dreaming) about my summer moto activities. Aside from impromptu evening or weekend trips, or sneaky overnight runs, I have a 12 day or so solo Atlantic Canada trip in mind in August taking in a night travelling across from St Johns to PAB, then by ferry to explore Cape Breton, PEI and same on the way back.

Being the organised kind of chap that I am, I have found myself planning overnight stops, campsites...km's between destinations etc. However, I have had to remind myself recently that its the journey, not the destination that is what I find most appealing about moto travelling. Weather, mood, impulse or any number of factors could change my route once I set off....hell, I might even extend my trip a bit longer and change direction. I don't want to be tied to an agenda. The big girl S10 will be packed with camping gear, clothes, critical hand tools and hopefully whatever else I will need, and I will have passport and credit card in my pocket. So, I am considering planning not to plan as much as possible, and play things by ear (much more appealing!) But I don't want that this kind of "wild and reckless" behaviour to bite me in the derrière, so I have two burning questions -

1. Ferry - do I need to book outward and return to NL in advance, or can I just rock up and expect to get a spot for me and the bike? In addition, is it worth spending the cash on a cabin, or just rough it and put the money to better use on the trip?

2. Campsites/Hotels etc - I am not looking for any guarantee's here, and who know how touristy Atlantic Canada will actually be this summer, but in your experience travelling in these parts, is a campsite spot or hotel room easy enough to find on-the-hoof? Wild camping was discussed on a different thread, and I would be prepared to do this if necessary.

Opinions, thoughts, experiences all welcome.
