USA to Canada Shipping

A quick question to ensure my traditional thoughts regarding purchases in the US and shipping to Canada are not out of date. On multiple occasions I have had unfavourable luck bringing items into Canada with DHL, UPS, FEDEX, etc. For the better part of the last 15 yrs I have requested USPS shipping only.

Are my beliefs still factual? Looking to make some purchases in the US soon and the Americans love their UPS. Just wondering if all the brokerage fees, taxes etc still exists with the three named above?
