Travel Insurance

With some Inmates here making travel plans I thought they might want to share their knowledge about in-Country Travel Insurance, and travel to another country as well, especially while riding outside their home zone for more than a month.
I saw this in the local news this morning and began to realize I don't know much about this:

We're talking about insurance to get you the same basic health care benefits in another Province as you'd that you'd get at home. My basic understanding is:
- you're basically on your own in Quebec without private health insurance
- any medical insurance provider may have issues if you're outside Canada for more than 30 days without letting them know or requesting extended coverage
- and that some folks have been burned by buying 'annual' travel policies only to learn they have to return to their home zone once a month for the policy to remain valid.
- my only experience was having to pay for a couple of ambulance rides from a crash site to emerg. I had to pay the local hospital (~$1600. total) and my home province wouldn't reimburse me because a medical professional in my home province had not approved the ambulances. I think I managed to claim some of it on my income tax.

Anyway, that's it. I get that we all need to "read the fine print" and all, but not everyone (like me) even knows what basic questions to ask to get the insurance they need for out of province or country travel.
Any additional knowledge, experiences and comment you have are welcome...
