Filtering

I had to drive into L.A. on some business yesterday, and was again reminded that motorcycle filtering is allowed in California.
For those that aren’t aware, Motorcycles are allowed to ride between vehicles if the prevailing traffic is moving at less than 25 mph.
The concept is a good one, in that one can work his way through stopped or slowing traffic in order to get to the front of the line at a stoplight. The assumption is that Motorcycles accelerate quicker than cars, therefore traffic congestion is reduced to some extent.

The reality is that many motorcyclists elect to filter at just about any speed that is below the posted limit, including on expressways. On one stretch of Interstate, I was startled to have a motorcycle squeeze alongside me at around 70 mph as traffic was quickly slowing on a curve. I know that the AMA has long been a proponent of making filtering legal in all 50 States, but after witnessing all of the aggressively filtering motorcyclists again yesterday, I just cringe, especially given how particularly aggressive L.A. drivers are. I didn’t see a motorcycle accident in the six hours that I was stuck in California, but there were some mighty close calls.
