Brake caliper alignment

I’m not sure if caliper alignment is a procedure with many bikes. But on my 1290r there is a simple procedure to follow. Basically with the caliper bolts loose, apply and hold the front brake lever via zip tie and torque caliper bolts.

After my visit to the dealer for new pads and rotors, the mechanic said to me that the brake felt soft. And they were soft, but I felt like maybe the result of being new. An adjustment of the brake lever and off I went. Everything felt fine. But after about 600klm, I noticed a pattern on one of the new rotors. And that this rotor was much warmer compared to the other side.

I pulled the pad to notice it was wearing uneven. And that the pistons were not even. To me, it was a clear indication that the caliper wasn’t aligned during the shop visit.

I re-aligned the caliper as per the service manual. And all is good again.

It’s sad when you can’t trust a factory dealer to work on your bike. This error could have easily lead to premature pad wear and warped rotor.
