You would really enjoy this area I think Mike. The Chalet Motel would make a nice base to ride out from.

    Yellowstone – Season 5

The next day it was time to say goodbye to South Dakota. After coffee we rode to Rapid City for my PCR test that I would need to enter Canada in 72 hours. As we rode south with the Black Hills on my right and the opening plains spreading out to my left I started to feel sad that the end of the...

Some of you may remember Michelle Lamphere from Sturgis, South Dakota. Michelle has travelled the world extensively and in 2013 she rode her KLR to NL. Unfortunately she had a crash on the TransLab that caused a broken leg resulting in her staying in Newfoundland with Tammy until her leg healed...

Next up was the Needles Highway (awesome, especially the one way rock tunnels) and on to the Crazy Horse Memorial and past Mount Rushmore. I could not help but to ride Iron Mountain Road again to make a loop back into Custer.

I could not manage from the road at all despite best intentions. It is nice reliving it now after being home for a bit. I will be in Vernon mid next week if you're around.

Yes the road surface was excellent with just some washboard on the inclines... nice to stand up and go. It wasn't very dusty either. Some roads dead-ended and one arrived at a house ranch.

    Yellowstone – Season 5

I left the wildlife loop and rode the winding dirt road to Mount Coolidge, about 6,000 ft elevation and the highest point in the park. This is the location of a fire tower built back in the 30's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Today there are also a couple of communications towers there. The...

    Yellowstone – Season 5

This day was just an incredible experience in the Black Hills sampling the reasons why the riding here is so good. After coffee, Trash went his way leaving me to my own devices. I immediately headed out to see where those dirt fire roads would lead that I got a sampling of on the wildlife loop...

Wind Cave has unique "Boxwork" formations on the ceiling. 95% of the world's discovered boxwork is found here. Leaving the cool temps of the cave we spent a third night in the tent at the park.

As the heat of the day increased, a visit to Wind Cave National Park was a good idea. Wind Cave breathes as the barometric pressure changes. I was fascinated to learn about the Lakota People's Emergence Story. Please check it out...

    Yellowstone – Season 5

We continued on the wildlife loop (which is not a loop now due to road maintenance shutting down a small portion) until we got to the bison herdmaster's lodging. The park goes from a pine forest to open plains of mixed grass. It is a beautiful landscape. A variety of gravel forest roads lead off...

    Yellowstone – Season 5

Yes it was cool to shut down and just watch them cross the road in a herd. We didn't ride 14 we were further south. I am indeed very fortunate to have Trash show me his country and that is him in the photo. The GS did very well on the trip but it is no problem for him to loose me when he...
