This was my third visit to the Rock and here,s how it went. I took the night boat to Port aux Basque on July 4th, landed around 7AM and headed to Burgeo. I camped at Sandbeach PP hoping that some of the Sleepyhead crew would soon arrive. I was trying to get to the Dildo Run gathering but had a breakdown in NB (that's another story!) Weather cloudy. Next day Hunterson and Scooter arrive via Red Indian lake romp.We meet and do the campfire, agree to ride out together next morning. We ride to Gros Morne, and with my excellent guides we get a campsite at Trout River. . Next morning Hunterson heads home and Scooter and I have breakfast in Woody Point. After examining his rear tire, Scooter decides to head home as well. I ride from Woody Point to Pistolet Bay PP near Raleigh,to see the Viking camps at Lance aux Meadows. I wish i knew how to post pictures. Anyhow, it was worth the trip there and for the first time, the sun shone for at least 30 minutes! Raleigh was welcoming and I had breakfast there before heading back down the west coast and over to Deer Lake and to Sir Richard Squires PP. I got to see salmon running up Big Falls on the Humber River. I missed seeing the Insectarium but did get to visit with Gerard Beaulieu, owner of Gateway to the North RV park, which is across the road from insectarium. He is a vintage bike enthusiast that I'd met on a previous trip there. Jeez I wish I knew how to post pics, I've got a video of Gerard playing with his motorized Caribou head. Built it from power seat controls off Cadillac.
So, from Deer Lake I rode to Notre Dame PP, and Lewisport. I had a delicious pulled pork sandwich at Norma's little shop there. I was needing a new rear tire, so on Monday I called the Toy Box in Mt. Pearl. They ordered the tire, I moved to Butter Pot PP, and I rode over to get it installed on Tuesday. In and out in short time and the weather was looking fine, finally. So, I cut out across Rt 13 and headed down the Avalon Peninsula, it was a fine day and I made good miles.I cut across RT.91 at Riverside toward Colinet so I could get a look at Cataracts PP an awesome gorge in the middle of 91. Arrived at Placentia around 7PM Tuesday. There was a tropical storm nearby, I camped at former army base overlooking Argentia ferry terminal,a great free campsite. Rain and wind next morning kept me in the tent til noon. I had late breakfast (2PM!) at Philips Cafe As conditions abated I broke camp and headed to Cape St. Mary's to see the bird sanctuary there. Then back on the hiway til rain and fog got me looking for shelter around 7PM. I found myself at Bellvue Beach and took supper and a room at the Osprey's Nest motel. I know, it's supposed to be a camping trip, but that bed and hot shower did feel great. And my supper of cod tongues was just right after a days ride. From here I decided to ride to Marystown on Burin Peninsula. Stayed at Frenchmans Cove PP that night, and in the early morning rode the loop around Burin peninsula visiting Grand Bank, Lawn, St. Lawrence and Burin. It was a beautiful day and I just rode all day. I wound up below Corner Brook at Barachoix Pond PP (a run of 567 miles). So, next day an easy glide to Rose Blanche Lighthouse, and supper at Margaree, then onto the boat at 9PM goodbye to The Rock,a wonderful place. Thanks to RTR for being there too. Special shout outs to Scooter and Hunterson. See you next time.
