May 2014, Virginia, USA to the Rock

I will be making a trip up that way to see the sites late May of this year. I will be with three other riders. All of us on big bore Adventure bikes, a Tenere, two GSAs and a Tiger 955i. We will be looking to hit some gravel/dirt roads as well as take in as much as we can inside of about a week. Skill levels include a former semi-pro trials rider, a hare scrambles guy and two beginner/novice off-roaders. Three of us will head to NY from Central VA and pick up rider #4, head to Maine day 2 and toward Nova Scotia on day 3. Maybe a day in Nova Scotia and then catch the ferry on day 4 or 5. Ride the Rock (West Coast is looking great) for 4 or 5 days and head home. Most likely, arriving 23 May and meandering toward Norris Point afterwards, potentially stopping in Stephenville for the night after getting off the ferry. At this point, plans at best are loose and itinerary is strictly based on reports from others and "city" sizes and lodging availability easily found on Google searches.

Canuman was quite helpful in pointing me toward some great areas and this web page. I'm hoping to talk with him some more about his trip there last year.

Any additional info from a new or local perspective is appreciated.

Will I need to make reservations on the $100 ferry from N. Sydney to Port aux Basques and back in advance or is there plenty of room that time of year? Also, it appears there are only 2 ferries a day, 1145 and 2345, taking about 6 hours to get from Nova Scotia to the Rock.

Thanks for any positive input!
