Helmet Expiry Insurance Laws

I am concerned about the vague details surrounding the manufacturer's recommended replacement term of 5 years on helmets.

I know all about the UV breakdown of components, padding flattening out, etc... don't need to belabor all the points of why 5 years this and 5 years that... bottom line from all the research I have been doing, even under the Canadian Traffic Act, there is absolutely nowhere that states they "MUST" be replaced!

Manufactures recommend 5 to 7 based on usage. If living in southern states where one can ride 7 days a week 12 months per year I can understand the 5 to 7 recommendation.

Here in Newfoundland, one mostly rides 4 months in cooler weather a couple days a week.

Does anyone have any FIRM facts regarding insurance and expired helmets?

I don't want this discussion to be about the reasons why your head is important, and how the EPS layer breakdown over time etc.... just FACTs on the regulation (which there are none!) and repercussions of insurance not paying out if in an accident wearing an 'expired helmet'...
