“The provincial government has introduced sweeping new regulations banning all open fires in the province to prevent forest fires during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources says historically, 80 per cent of all forest fires in the province are caused by human activity.

Effective immediately, the setting of all open fires is banned on forest land or within 300 metres of forest land in all areas of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The ban will remain in effect until September 30 and includes grass burning, brush burning, campfires and personal fireworks.

Gas barbeques and CSA approved patio wood-burning devices are allowed except in areas where municipalities have issued a ban.

The minimum fine in place for those in violation is $1,000.

Government says the restrictions are consistent with similar actions being taken in other areas of the country to lower risks associated with exposure to the virus.”
