Breakdown Planning

Because I had a few (luckily) minor bike issues at the Soiree and have had occasional intermittent electrical issues (finally found and fixed) I've been turning my thoughts to what to do when something goes wrong.

The flat I had on Fogo island could have been very serious as there just isn't anything out there.

Without a lot of research I've invested in a CAA membership which was very reliable when I had my first (unreliable) motorcycle back in the day. They got me out of a few jams in Ontario.

The coverage I got was the Premier level which is 20 bucks more than the Plus level which is the minimum needed for motorcycle flatbed towing. What I get for this is pretty good so I thought I would share the main features:

  • one tow up to 320 km and 4 more up to 160 km to a service center
  • free fuel delivery including the fuel
  • locksmith service (up to 100 bucks)
  • two days car rental if towed from less than 160 km
  • 600 bucks for hotels. car rentals and other incidentals caused by breakdown more than 160 km
  • up to 2k reimbursed if the bike is destroyed by theft, fire, or accident while more than 160 k from home
  • optional death and dismembership insurance up to 500k
  • vehicle return to residence benefit

This all sounds good but I do have to call them to confirm if all of these items work for motorcycle touring. It should but who knows until I confirm everything. Still worth it for the flatbed towing service in my mind though.

There is a bunch of other stuff also but not really of interest to me. Bottom line is I feel a lot more secure now when travelling on the island.

I understand the service is not going to be as good as it is in Ontario. How is their service in Newfoundland? Please share your experience so that we can all benefit and consider the option carefully.
